Fall 2011 RTW: Alexander Wang

13 Feb

With his incredible CFDA/GQ Award for Menswear only a few days behind him, Wang is garnering quite a reputation for his design talent. That said, his past few shows have gotten mixed reviews for their unusual styles and take on certain trends. The main look in this collection was a take on outerwear — an inundation of unusual jackets that “almost poke fun at luxury and decadence” Wang says about the line. He magnifies masculine tuxedo jackets and giant sweaters and vests. He pokes fun at the prevalence of fur by garnishing sunglasses with the material (look two). That said, this collection just didn’t do it for me. I love Alexander Wang and I wear his designs all of the time, but I think this is the collection where he got to the point where he thinks he can get away with anything and still be Alexander Wang. Which is true, but there was no glamour or beauty in this collection. It was a series of sardonic looks that definitely made a point and were unusual and interesting, just nothing where I feel compelled to go purchase and wait for and fantasize about.
