Spring 2012: Jen Kao

12 Dec

In my opinion, Jen Kao is the Gareth Pugh/Mary Katrantzou/Haider Ackermann of NYFW. While they’re kind of on utterly distinct levels of wild design, she beats to her own drummer in the same way. Inspired by “haze,” Kao presented a really wild collection that was filled with references to nature and some amazingly intricate designs. Starting from the headdress in the first piece (something clearly fit for only ADR herself). The design of it — the origami 3D style — and the color worked perfectly with the collection. While none of these pieces really spoke to me — at all, I really admire the collection and am always intrigued by Kao’s vision. She tied in current trends with the colors and the whole idea of patterned pants (many of which reminded me of Tsumori Chisato’s Spring’11 collection) and the intense prints. This season is all about extremes and in that sense Kao did not stand apart from the pack as much as one would expect.
