Spring 2012: Badgley Mischka

27 Dec

Badgley Mischka rein superior in the girl-glam kind of fashion. It’s a bit of a niche market, with most designers airing towards ball-gown, award show couture rather than this type but it is also a style that is really wearable. While Badgley Mischka has always been a collection filled to the brim with dresses that exude the utmost femininity, this collection took it to a new level. The duo toyed with cuts more here than they have in recent collections. The show started off with a bang with strong, strong, exotic dresses that had unusual cuts and stole the show before it even began. The collection calmed down a bit afterwards, opting towards more subtle displays of the craft with the half peplums and the draped pieces. Badgley and Mischka incorporated some of their diffusion line styles in this show as well. The pieces for Mark + James are so well made that they’re practically indistinguishable from the rest of the show. There were, of course, the designer staples like the exotic skirts with the simple tops — sort of a fancier and less structured Jil Sander SS’11 piece. Those are the kind of styles that I immediately identify with Badgley Mischka in my mind. This show was a standout for the team — a rebranding where they prove that they are not confined by ultra-femininity and can really toy with other parts of the design world as well. Definitely a win in my book.

Fall 2011 RTW: Badgley Mischka

This was so old school hollywood and so glam. There were beautiful draped dresses and intricate beading contrasted with bold colors and geometric cuts. The combinations of different materials and prints was done in a previously unseen way. It was not blatant like the mixed plaids and argyles we saw with Altuzarra in the week (or later, depending on how you think of it). These are gorgeous and glamorous — even while missing the three looks that were worn to the Golden Globes almost a month ago. The colors were really shocking and the intensity of some of the evening wear was definitely red carpet worthy.

This Badgley Mishka look reminds me of the simple look of an oversize tank with a tight mini taken to the next level. The sheer tank with the long whice maxi skirt with embellishing is just such an easy, classic look. It’s the kind of thing I can imagine seeing at beach parties all summer long. While most of my favorite looks tend to be redcarpet couture gown style, I do love seeing everyday (or kind of everyday) looks on the runway.

Thakoon’s snakeskin mini dress is just such a great take on the look.

Monique Lhuillier gowns are glamorous and elegant. Mostly they have huge structure and embellishment. Similar to the Elie Saab, what I like so much about it this one was the simplicity of it. It’s a simple pattern but the colors are beautiful. The different shades of green are highlighted by the style. With the wraps and style the color transitions and makes it so beautiful to look at.

Such a fun Missoni caftan-like look. The simple color blocking and thick piping of the style is great. It’s typical Missoni, but manages to reinvent the style within the restraints of the brand.

Similar to the embellishing on the Badgley Mischka skirt, this Antonio Berardi dress is covered in small circular rouching patterns. The pale pink is beautiful and effeminate, the slit adds to the style while the olive green jean-jacket style turns this glamorous evening look into a more wearable style.

The Miu Miu collection was absolutely filled with fun patterns such as this one. I love the colors coming out of the deep black of the base color of the dress though.

Spring RTW 2011: Badgley Mischka

This was a beautiful show. Mark Badgley and James Mischka are quoted as saying they were inspired by a 1988 murder mystery called “White Mischief” (I added it to my netflix queue out of curiosity). What is really nice about this show is that it does, in fact, show looks from all three of the designers lines: the main line, the couture line, and Mark + James (a more contemporary line). The three lines are seamlessly worked together in the show and I, for one, had no idea this was three different lines (and price points) until I read a review stating that it was. I thought this was an absolutely beautiful show, although you can’t expect any less when it comes to Badgley Mischka.
